DB 11 : Kertesz and Cartier-Bresson versus Smith and Salgado

Compare the work of Andre Kertesz and Henri Cartier-Bresson versus the work of Eugene Smith and Sebastio Salgado. They are photojournalist with different approaches.

What are the main differences and similarities?

 Differences:  Andre Kertesz and Henri Cartier-Bresson think their photographs should leave as which they took them as, staying ture to the term reality. Andre Kertesz and Henri Cartier-Bresson are the of the photographer are invisible of the photographer, they believed that photographs should be invisible and only be seen as doing their works. However, Eugene Smith and Salgado are the visibility of the photographer. Both of them are photojournalists that took pictures in order to influence people, and they shoot the truth about World issues affect to the public.

 Similarities: The similarities between the work of Andre Kertesz and Henri Cartier-Bresson versus the work of Eugene Simith and Sebastio Salgado are that all of them have high passionate about photography, and four of them want to show their pictures to the public. What’s more they are all well known photographers that have great contributed to the world of photography.

 

 What's the better journalistic approach?

 In my opinion, the better journalistic approach would be Andre Ketesz and Henri Cartier-Bresson. The reason that they have better journalistic approach because their photos are natural and reality. It is very important to capture images in the real or raw situations and left untouched. In addition, they believed that photographers must not influence their photos by their emotions. On the other hand, Eugene Smith and Sebastio salgado they edited their photos to reflect their own emotions to influence public.

Assignment 2: Press photography versus art photography

1. The main differences and similarities between art and press photography 

    In my opinion, the main differences between Art photography and Press photography is that the Art photography can be edited, altered and made fun with their pictures as much as photographers want, the photographers use technology or editing tools to alter pictures that can get the quality they want, and show their ideas communicate with viewers to get their thoughts links together. However, Press photograph cannot change anything after shoots, it has to have objectivity and reality to the public, it likes newspaper, and they show us the current events and lifestyle stories. So, Press photographers cannot alter, but it shows a real moment in our lives, it must be true. On the other hand, the main similarities between art and press photography is both of them tell people stories or photographers ideas by pictures.

2.  Is it ethical and acceptable to alter art photographs? why? why not?

 Yes, it is ethical and acceptable to alter art photographs. The art photograph is not showing the truth to the public, it shows their creative. By using other mediums to help artists achieve the vision they want. Photographers are allowed to play with their own pictures and make fun with their images, the public will know that the pictures have been changed. Art is personal that does not need to show entire facts; it is to be enjoyed for personal reasons.

3. Is it ethical and acceptable to alter press photographs? why? why not?

 I do not think it is ethical and acceptable to alter press photographs. The purpose of these photos is show the truth, we cannot alter the facts. People have to look for the perfect time, location and the capture reality as the best as they can. Press photography must follow strict rules and guidelines to be published. Also, it cannot have any unreal element, otherwise people will misunderstand which press photo have been changed. Unfortunately, there are some Medias use edited photos which tell us the news of the day; we should reject that garbage immediately. Overall, it is unethical and unacceptable to alter press photographs.

1.  Press photograph

 The 2008 Sichuan earthquake or Great Sichuan Earthquake was a deadly earthquake that measured at 8.0 Ms and 7.9 Mw occurred at 01:09:56 on Monday, May 12, 2008 in Sichuan province of China, killing an estimated 68.000. Face the power of nature, we seem so small. This is a picture which the father lost his son in the disaster, he holded his son's body and burst into tears.

 The 2008 Chinese winter storms were a series of winter storm events that affected large portions of southern and central China starting on January 2008 until 6 February. According to some media sources the storms were directly responsible for at least 129 deaths. This is picture which shows the workers carrying wire on the tiny frozen road.

2. Art photography

 This is a African Daisy, in the early morning sun of a dew covered flower stood out dramatically against dark foliage.
